Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy and Nebraska Diplomat’s President Mary Gerdes present the Nebraska Diplomats President’s Award of Business Excellence to GeneSeek President Abe Oommen and Chief Scientific Officer Daniel Pomp.

The Nebraska Diplomats, the largest economic development organization in Nebraska, recognized contributions made by two Lincoln companies Monday, May 11. The ceremony celebrated the Nebraska Diplomats President’s Award for Business Excellence.

"GeneSeek was chosen for a variety of reasons,” Nebraska Diplomat Executive Director Lori Shaal said. “Mary (Gerdes) was impressed by how the company started, what they are doing and how GeneSeek is progressing.”

The award is presented every year by the organization and must go to businesses from the president’s city of residence.

Gerdes, who lives in Lincoln, chose two local businesses for the award. Gerdes selected a large company and one small company to represent Lincoln business achievement, said Shaal. The other company recognized at the award ceremony was Fiserv, a financial services company offering banking software solutions.

When asked how he felt about winning the award, GeneSeek’s Director of Instrumentation Dan Thompson said it felt “gratifying.”

“It is great to be recognized, especially in an economic slow time,” Thompson said. “However, it is not all about awards. Our number one priority is serving our customers.”

GeneSeek began in 1998 at the Technology Development Center business incubator at the University of Nebraska Technology Park. GeneSeek quickly outgrew the Technology Development Center and moved next door to One Technology Place (OTP). The company recently completed an expansion at OTP.

GeneSeek provides research and product development services for agribusiness, biotechnology, life science and pharmaceutical industries. It also offers state-of-the-art health care for animals and humans through research and clinical diagnostic services.  Abe Oommen and Daniel Pomp founded the company.
