GeneSeek sponsored an event on September 17 at the University of Nebraska Technology Park with guest presenter Dr. Stewart Bauck, executive director of research and development for Igenity, a division of Merial Limited.
The title of the seminar was “Iron Chef – The Quest for the Perfect Steak and Other Recent Advances in Bovine Genomics.” Bauck lead discussions about the beef industry, studying DNA and how Igenity is using science to produce the best pieces of meat.
“Through our collaboration with GeneSeek, we have developed and are developing tools, including genomic profiles, that allow us to select and manage animals of the very highest quality,” Bauck said. “Animals with these traits have been shown to produce superior beef that consistently meets or exceeds consumer expectations.”
Igenity is the DNA testing division of Merial, a world leader in animal health that produces pharmaceutical products and vaccines for livestock, pets and wildlife.
GeneSeek provides research and product development services for agribusiness, biotechnology, life science and pharmaceutical industries. It also offers state-of-the-art health care for animals and humans through research and clinical diagnostic services. Abe Oommen and Daniel Pomp founded the company.
Merial and GeneSeek have been working together since 2003.
“Today, Geneseek is a key partner in the day-to-day business operations of Merial,” Bauk said. “They provide genotyping services for the Igenity Livestock Production Business Unit on a daily basis.”
Bauk believes joining forces with fellow Technology Park businesses has been beneficial to the company.
“We have recently made contact with another business in the Tech Park through a mutual contact with Geneseek,” he said. “If there are ways that we can efficiently coordinate activity with various entities through the Tech Park, then it is a great benefit for Merial. It is sort of a one-stop-shop.”
